Chiang Mai, Chiengmai or Chiangmai, we get used to different spellings of this major and ancient city in the north of Thailand. On this map we see an unusual name which pops up a few times in the late 19th Century. That is Zimme.
Nan has its present day spelling, but Lamphan is shown as Labong and Lampang is Lagong.
This map is interesting for what’s not there. Udon Thani is now one of Thailand’s larger cities, but its importance grew in the second half of the 20th Century especially during the Vietnam War when the US built an airbase near the town.
Khon Kaen is shown as Kon-khene and Nong Khai is Nong-cai.
In the south of Thailand apart from Phuket island we see almost all the towns with different names.
